Guys and or gals, it ain't no toy, it's quite heavy, made of cast iron. The charge fits in the hollow in the middle of the projectile and when it hits it has an impact fuse. Instead of exploding, they send out a column of white smoke. The target is at a known distance from two towers and spotters in the towers score the impact point by triangulation. At least that's how they did it when I was stationed on a gunnery and bombing range. By now they probably have some kind of GPS grid to score the bombs. They are dropped from fighter type aircraft one at a time and the pilots must make a satisfactory score to remain combat certified. The practice bombs are of two different weights , 5 lb and 25 lbs., and I think they are called a MK76. Monty

It looks similar to the one in the pic but the fins are different.

When I was a very young boy, a friend and I found a cast iron "bomb". Almost identical to his except ours was a good bit bigger...it seemed at the time anyhow but I was only around 7 or 8 at the time so perspective can be off. But I do remember it being quite heavy and I cradeled it like a baby because of its weight and size.

It also had a "bolt?" on the end that apparently was screwed into it...and we couldn't get it off. The bolt head didn't protrude like the one in the pic, rather it fit snugly like any regular bolt with just the head exposed to be able to screw it in.

We dropped it off a bridge :o...hey...we were kids...

We also found one a good big bigger and was hollow and light-weight...marked with writing...something about chemicals if I remember correctly.

Both of these were found where an excavating company was located by a creek, and both were in the creek.
I don't remember what happened to the second one...but now I am curious if the iron one is still somewhere in that creek...it's not very deep at all.

No but you were the only one to insist that he post the item with a ruler...even after he ammended his original post to include the size. That's calling someones word into doubt...where I come from that's calling someone a liar.

Whatever! Still don't see a picture with a ruler next to it, Now don't get me wrong, I'm not calling anyone a liar, but I'm sure that guy has seen this eveytime someone has posted on it, you tell me why or how about shopdog tell me why he can't take a picture of it next to a ruler, if you are going to post here asking for help, and then can't take a simple picture, then don't post here.

If you are not calling him a liar then why are you still insisting that he post the item with a ruler? He already stated very clearly that it is 11 inches long. I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here...

...and telling someone to not post here if they do not post with a ruler isn't very welcoming.

Because YOU sent me a PM. That's why I came back here, otherwise I really don't care. BUT YOU had to send me a PM and kept puching the issue.

OK, it seems a couple of folks need to hug and make up.

More importantly, I'm simply surprised that Monty finally made a correct ID for a change. :icon_jokercolor:

that find is the bomb --- really it is--a practice bomb -- even though its small its flight pattern is like a bigger bomb was -- a very unusual find indeed . no need to fight about it -- in my veiw its pefectly ok to ask the poster its size to assist in iding the item --- once it was stated it was 11 inches long however --- to insist on a ruler to be put in the photo is a bit much (in my view). so just forgive and forget it ok?

Myself, I prefer something in the pic to better visualize the size, but thats just me. Its not always possible.
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,117700.0.html

When posting in "What Is It?", please give members the information they need to help identify your find:

1. Post sharp closeup photos of both the front and the back.

2. State the actual size of the item. Also, if possible, put something with it in the photo for scale: a common U.S. coin, a ruler, etc.

3. If there are any inscriptions which cannot be easily read in the photos, type them in full in your post.

4. If there are maker's marks, numbers, symbols, or other marks on the back which are not easily seen in the photo, post a closeup or a drawing of them.

5. Indicate the composition of the item. For example: "thin brass, filled with lead on the back."

As far as the ID, I searched but couldnt find a pic of an 11 inch MK76 practice bomb. A tad smaller at 9 inches, willie, but I think we can call this one solved. solved check.gif
