Somehow between Diggummup's recent post and my own warped mind I came up with the idea, what would you do if you found that one huge, once in a lifetime find that was worth 50-100K. Last yr, here in northern Maine a guy found a 6 figure baseball card, which he later sold at auction. So, let's say you find a very rare, nearly one of a kind collectable at a yard sale and you have only $1-$5 in it, so there is no immediate need to turn over your money. It is worth several thousand dollars...........do you keep it or sell it. Does it matter if it is right up your alley or if it is of a subject matter that doesn't interest you? Is it more important to have it or to have the cash? What would you do? To me, it would probably matter if it was A. a coin because that is what I collect and B. is it something I really consider a part of history. When I get a really old coin and I hold it in my hand, I can't help my mind from asking, "Did George Washington hold this same half penny, or maybe Lincoln carried this 1846 Seated Liberty dime?" If it was something that could be proven to belong to a man or woman of history, it would be hard to part with. It would probably come down to paying for my daughter's college, but think no matter what I would hold it for at least a while. Enough of my ramblings, let's hear yours guys.

If I didnt like the item I'd sell it,I have found items worth a few pennies I've kept and wont sell.

This would be an easy decision for me because I am not a true collector of anything. I would sell it although I would be very careful about the logistics of the sale and transfer of ownership of a $50,000+ item. Having never handled a sale of anything (besides a house) of anywhere near this value, I would look very carefully into the best way to complete the transaction before putting it up for sale. As far as what to do with the proceeds of a major sale like this, well, that is a no-brainer for me, too. My major financial objective at the moment is getting my house paid off as soon as possible. So, the proceeds from such a sale would go there and save me several thousands of dollars in interest on the mortgage.

Simple really. I would ask myself if I would buy that same item for several thousand dollars if one came up for sale. If the answer is no I would sell it and spend the money on things I like more. My house is paid for but my old S10 is getting tired so I might buy a new truck and use some to finish up a couple of hot rod projects I have out in the shop.

After selling the Dedham vase that I found in July for a nice profit my appetite is wet for more sales. The buyer complimented me on its rarity which made me think of what other items that I did not fully research or gave up on due to a lack of info on the web. Not realizing sometimes lack of info means rare. One item I remembered is and old chinese marriage bowl. I always searched using the term chinese wedding bowl and found no examples. Now that I used marriage instead I was quite shocked. Now I have to get it appraised.

I haven't found mine yet, but got a little warm up having done the talking for this one. :)

Anything I buy is ALWAYS going to be flipped for profit and the only thing that brings the time into play is if selling sooner or later probably means more money. For most items it's better to start the process right away and not sit on them for months or years. Now if it is a detesting find, especially something I have interest in, I could keep no problem, but would start thinking about possibly selling it at the 20k and up point. Then it would really depend what it was and where I seen the value down the road.

IP, with your 3 banner finds, I have to admit, I figured you had already found yours.

For detecting I may have them already, but I'll never give up hope for the big one... real big one. BTW.. my best three are not the banners ones. :)

For buying and selling I haven't even reached the level of the ones I've dug, but definitely have a lot more decent ones as there's always good stuff to buy, which is obviously a lot easier than finding in the ground. I definitely haven't found mine in buying, because I know the potential is huge... just need the one really lucky score.

Tory (AKA Clad) I know what I would not do. Take it to Rick at Pawn Stars. I know he is in the pawn business and expect him to lo-ball everybody. But, there are many high end auction houses that will get the seller so much more money.

No one would know a thing about it.....

I agree with TH on this one. I would keep it safe in the safe, safe from any non-safe people 8-)

So, then you would keep it. That is what I wanted to know, not would you broadcast it here or to the world, just would you sell it or keep it. And, does it depend on if it is something you already collect, or is historic, belonged to a great man or woman you admire, etc.

Unless it was something I really had a passion for , like Coins , or specific Antiques, I would sell it and get what I want with that money.

Even with my Detecting Finds, I keep ALL Silver/Old Coins I dig...But when it comes to Gold rings? I could careless about them excpet for what tehy weigh...I kept my First Gold Ring...but plan on ditching the rest of it when Gold Prices go back up

Depends on what it is and how bad I need the money, nothing I find is going to do me much good sitting in the casket with me.

I sold an original Harpers Weekly newspaper with front page announcing the death of Th. Jefferson and a letter to the editor for Jefferson declining to attending the 25th anniversary of signing of Dec of Independence due to ill health both printed in same paper.

I sold it 20 years ago for $400, I would give $600 to have it back now.

No, but the revolvers, pistols, rifles and shotguns will be in the safes for my daughter to have when I am in the ground. Reading your message below each post, we may have more in common than you originally thought. :icon_thumleft:.

P.S. Don't tell anyone, but there is ammo for them too. LOL

Parents are supposed to give to the kids, you have a Good heart!

Unless I love the item more than I love money its self then I sell the item (even if I collect that sort of thing)! I can't come up with many if any things that I'd rather have than $50K+ & not to mention I can turn $50K+ into $100K+ with a little time & effort. I mean if I answered an ad (which I wouldn't) for a 65 Corvair for $700 & it turned out to be a 65 Corvette I might keep it a while (less than a year) but I would cash in by selling it!

What about the New Haven man that found the $98K hidden in a desk he bought off CL! New Haven man finds $98K in desk he bought on Craigslist | WTNH.com Connecticut
