Forgot to say that it's about 5 inches in length. The axe head we found literally in a rocky area just outside my house by my son.

That could be a preform / blank. Rough shaped in to make a point later and never finished. It could also be a knife as is. Edge wear or resharpenings could point you towards knife use.
 

Still learning here. This piece is rather wide, about 3 inches. Would they use one this wide for a blank?
 

I think a lot of times the blanks served as a knife or scapper until they decided to work it into shape. They all started out big most times. Work on it a litle use it if it was working down well it could possible be turned into a point. My opinion.

looks like a cache blade that was in the process of being made into a point imo.there does appear to be secondary edge work on it so its possible that is the finished product.nice relic,thx for sharing the pic.
