Border of last glaciar N of Illinois , end of morain .

Looks like float copper to me.
It comes down from upper Michigan where they had many copper mines in years past.
I have run into it in the past usually all green from the copper.
Great finds with that much gold content. Beautiful specimens.
If you head up again send me a PM or E-Mail I would love to find one of those beauties.
I am heading down to the windy city this week end to visit my mom.
I am close to your stomping grounds and looking for a hunting partner.

Good morning, and Merry Christmas. :hello:

Interesting nuggets. If they contain a measurable amount of gold, in excess of a few parts per million, then they would not be float copper from the copper deposits of Michigan. Exhaustive studies of the trace elements in the copper and the enclosing rocks of the native copper deposits have been carried out over many decades in an effort to develop some geochemical signatures for exploration purposes. The studies have been done, and redone, as technology for measurement of lower and lower levels has advanced.

To my knowledge there were few samples that ever showed a gold content above ppm levels. I am aware of a report of visible gold in a sample from the Tamarack Mine, near Calumet, but that is from the late 1800's and was never confirmed. The native copper deposits of the Keweenawan are notable because of their lack of associated gold for the amount of copper that was deposited. Similar deposits of native copper, of the same age and geological settings, around the world exhibit that same lack of gold content.

This makes the solution to the mystery of the origin of these nuggets even more elusive.

Hope this helps a bit.

I kind of agree with Dave. It could be metal that was skimmed off with the slag when it was smelted. What is the biggest piece you have found? If you can prove those are natural nuggets I would be interested in buying one for a speciman. Nice stuff. Jimmygoat

Was there any evidence of Volcanic activity in the area?

I've seen nugget that have be tear drop shaped in areas like that.

Gold was formed, Got Hot and Dripped around.

The Metallic contents you list are within natural gold states.

They don't look natural to me. Look like something some one melted with a torch maybe copper & brass.

I have a natural copper nugget found in AZ that looks real similar to these, minus the apparent gold mixed in. Perhaps a copper/gold mixture brought down in the glaciers from Canada. I know there are a lot of natural copper nuggets found in the Midwest from the glacial activity. Chuck Lassiter at midwestprospector.com has found quite a bit of copper. You can contact him via his website and forward your photos. He might be able to tell you what you have, as he is considered a Midwestern gold/gem guru or sorts.

Let us know what you find out, as they are very interesting!
