As above --- ladies powder container for purse 1920's +

I don't think women took loose powder in a cylinder container in their purse during the Roaring '20's because the "compact" was already invented(1890). Of course, makeup has been used since the Renaissance era, invented by a woman named Signora Toffana. She created a face powder called Aqua Toffana, which was made from arsenic. (sounds yummy doesn't it; lol) In 1914 Max Factor invented what we consider today as 'make-up,' then followed by the Maybelline sisters and then Revlon. I'm still going with a sachet holder to be placed in clothes drawers. Breezie

Stick with the obvious...

Is there some reason you don't think it's a salt/pepper shaker?

I think fisher2 was right.

.... or Holy Water sprinkler.

Why would salt shaker or any shaker for one thing have one big hole, six small holes.
I would take a couple wrenches and open it, see what the inside looks like.

My Catholic friend was reading over my shoulder, saw the pic, and said it was an old Holy Water container. I'm still going with sachet/powder holder, and I agrees with Taz, I'd open it. It may be like a "Weather Rock" after you open it. If it has salt in it, it's a salt shaker, if it has a perfume smell, yada yada yada. Breezie

Is that a hole in the center?

Colonial mens wig powder tin. The black paint suggests it was made for a man.

That doesn't look like a hole in the center. Look at the shadowing and the light reflecting off the top of the convex shape. It appears to be a rivet holding the cap in place. If it were a hole, the lid would appear to be much thicker than the body. An earlier post said it was too thin for pressurization and I'm guessing the lid and the body are the same thickness.

big hole in cent might be for a knob to slide a plate with holes to line up with smaller holes to open and close so it would not spill out in pocket or purse

Am I the only one who sees that is not a hole but a rivet to secure the lid to the body or am I blind?
O.P., Please respond and put at least this detail to rest.

The shaker or what ever it is has not got a hole in the middle it has six little holes around the edges,

The material thats inside may very well be rust, the holes are not big enough for toothpicks, so thats pretty well out.

So a powder shaker or holy water sprinkler sounds more like it ,it had some gold gilting on it at one time.

thanks for all the replys

Wow very big clue artzstuff! Heres a link I found. http://thevintageperfumevault.blogspot.com/2009/02/cara-nome-perfume.html

United Drug Company was the first maker who produced Cara Nome perfume in 1918. I think its the Langlors or Langlois Company, New York.
