To anyone posting in The What Is It Forum here, it would be a huge assistance to all of us T'Netter 'What Is It' voluntary, willing and helpful researchers if you photograph your finds against a darker background, preferably in natural light and especially in focus.
By simply using a darkish blue cloth as a background, natural light if possible,
(or a couple of light sources from different angles - for example - a table lamp and a hand held torch)
For focus, nothing beats a tripod (I paid NZ$15 for mine - so about $8 USD 8-))
If you want any more assistance, just PM me.

We'll get it right eventually.

Yeah, Right! - is a famous NZ saying.

Cheers, Mike

Edit: I have edited this post to remove a contentious comment which has been misconstrued as indicating potential harassment - I apologise if I have hurt anyone's feelings :tongue3:

Another tip for those of us who get blurred pictures. Get a high speed memory card for your camera. Memory is speed rated with 10 being the best. The image records quicker and focus is vastly improved.
They sell for about 10. Here is an auction for reference. 64GB Micro SD Card TF Flash Memory MicroSD microSDHC Class 10 Free Adapter | eBay

I ordered one thanks. But stop harassing me!!!:wink::wink::wink: :laughing7:

I am guilty of posting horrible pictures... when I post a pic of a whatsit... my responses should be "dirty fingernails"

Nothing wrong with dirty fingersnails....I prefer seeing the finds just as they came out of the ground myself.....it may be a fetish. :)

Yes of course they are important too Tim but if he posts the instructions, will you accuse him a harrassment

Stating that you are going to PM people every time you see a photo you don't like is harassment, period. Sorry if you don't see it that way, but that's how it will be taken by most posters here.

I dont think he is referring to photos he doesnt like. I think you have misunderstood. He is trying to share some tips he learned from other TN members. There are some posters that lack even the most basic camera skills.

But I agree do not PM people and do not try to help people that dont want help. I see what you mean.

Where does it say he's going to PM people?

I intend sending this message to everyone who posts a What Is It pic with a white/light/kaleidoscope type background.
Maybe you should remove this part trikiwiki about your intentions. It may sound threatening to some people. Myself I understand what you are trying to say. The majority of auto focus cameras will not adjust properly to a white background.

In the beginning of TN when I first suggested marking our what is it's as solved, I did the same thing. I posted to everyone that forgot to post the solved green check. Most people appreciated my efforts to make this a better place but one person thought it was harassment. If members here dont appreciate your efforts to help trikiwiki, than dont bother with them. They will come around eventually and realize you were just trying to help..

BigCy, I appreciate your support on this simple issue. Your green check for SOLVED What Is It initiative, was the inspiration for me starting this thread. Your success in encouraging POSTERS to take a moment or two, to enhance the USER FRIENDLY nature of this site, and especially the WII Forum, is exemplary. All I want to do is assist the OP's quest for an identification and for the RESEARCHERS/IDENTIFIERS to have the best information available.
I'm surprised by the number of 'excuses' this post has received.
If you can click the button on a camera to take a photograph - then you have the power to enhance the pictures you take, with some simple 'tricks'.

On another note: I have removed the apparently contentious comment from my original post.

Cheers, Mike

Beings the "rest of us" here cannot "hold" the items posted here "in question"...

Photos are important.
As well as sizes.
Using a simple "known" coin or "item" for comparison is just as important.

I think this "topic/helpful hints" are needed..

Well done Tiki.

I respect you and I appreciate it when you add your opinion. ...
... Again, I have a ton of respect for your and your opinion. Just giving you the other side's point of view.

I thought we were all on the same Team.:headbang:

Lately I have noticed some very good photos with white backgrounds. I dont know how they do it.:dontknow: My camera will not photograph well on pure white.

I realize you are trying to make this a better place trkikiwi. Everyone should do a little to try and make it better. At least that used to be the mindset here. Has that changed with all the new members? And sorry crispin if it appeared anyone was picking on you. We are all on the same team with the same interesting hobby.

If I see an item not marked Solved, I still sometimes try to remind them. But I do not intend on harassing anybody. And I no longer have the time to remind everybody.

Trikiwiki you have inspired me to go out and purchase a tripod. :icon_thumright: My pictures are not as good as they used to be. I guess my hands are not as steady.
