what metal detector is the best

this is a loaded question! there are too many good detectors to keep track of! for nugget and relic hunting, i would recommend the whites MXT.

This is like asking which is better, Chevy, Ford or Dodge.
And which is better, a couple, sedan or hardtop/convertible.

I know that didn't help but each person has his favorites. I love my ACE 250, but this is not to say it is better than a Whites DFX.

I assume your question is for the best relic/nugget VLF detector for less than $1000 and does not include high end PIs or soon to be released PIs.

Actually there are only a handfull of VLFs that can be good for both nugget hunting and relic hunting. The point is that nugget detectors must have high frequency for the smallest nuggets and only a few detectors are suited for relics and nuggets.

Hollowpointred is correct- the MXT is good for both. Also my X-5 is good, Tesoro LST is excellent. The Tesoro Vaquero has the necessary frequency but absolutely nothing printed on it for nugget hunting -It is a big ?. I think that is about it as most coin/relic detectors are low frequency. There are some gold detectors that you can argue about that can be used for purposes other than nugget hunting (Eureka, even the Gold Bug2).
The latest offering is Minelabs X-70 which has high frequency coils- I would take a close look at this puppy as it has been advertised as coin/relic/nugget. No nugget reviews on the X-70 yet as it has only been out for a couple of weeks. I would wait until Steve H. reviews it for nugget potential on the Terra X-70 forum.

The above detectors are the best for relic/nugget for under $1000. The X-5 actually was slightly more but as they don't make them any more it is a mute point(When will Troy come out with the X-7?-should be a killer machine for coin/relic/nugget).

well that all sounds good and i would like to hear more on what you the people think. I have used the gold bug 1 i love that detector put I'm looking into others.

This is a hard question to answer easiely. I'd suggest you check out each manufactures web site and learn all ou can about the different machines. Some here will suggest one detector and someone else will call it a "POS."

The MXT is ok, but in my opinion the X-Terra 70 is better and I have used both. But a lot depends on how much you want to spend too.

The best detector made is the one that helps you find the most treasure. This answer is on par with the question. ::) Monty

Nice one Monty. That is part of what I would say. The other part is RESAERCH. Check all major makers. Fisher, Garrett, Minelab, Whites to name a few, and note what they reccommend for relic hunting. Then narrow it down by price and features. Finally download the manuals for those you are still considering and see if you can understand it, and can use it or learn to use it. Now it is down to personal choice as it should be.

I guess you would first have to define what you meen by "the best", (deepest, most durable................)

I thinks its all a matter of opinion and personal preference, I prefer the explorer xs, because of its performance, though its built flimsy.

Anyone know where the idea of stuffing a round lower into a square upper came from? "XS-2" Never could figure that one out ::)
