I found small metal item in city park last night. It has no markings on either side, looks like stainless steel or silver, and no reaction to a magnet?????????

When I found it, I assumed it was stainless steel, looks like the letter C back to back, and has a ring like it was worn on a chain either necklace or key, but when I got to my truck I found it is not affected by a magnet.

What metals have no effect by a magnet?

I thought about aluminum, but it seemed to hard. It does not bend easily, it is about the thickness of a dime and about 1 inch long x 1/2 wide. But you are probably correct, it most likely is aluminum.

Thanks.

Most metals that contain carbon will be magnetic. Most stainless steels are non-magnetic. 416 grade stainless is due to the added carbon to aid in its machinability. You may find vrey slight magnetic properties in stainless parts that have undergone some sort machining or stamping. Many stainless springs will draw to a strong magnet. I sell threaded fasteners and you would be surprised to learn about the various metallic materials and their uses.

If it was stainless steel, most stainless has a "grain" to it that you should be able to see.

Silver alloy?
White gold?
Platinum? (Platinum has only been hallmarkable precious metal since 1976.)

Does it look something like this?

Have you inspected it closely with a magnifying glass? And is there nothing at all on it?

Functional,

It looks identical to that down to the clasp, it is blank on the front and rear, it has no writting on it that I could see, and there is no grain to it.

I did not use a magnifying glass as I assumed it was stainless and left it in my hunting bag with the other misc items I picked up the last week when I came home. It was when I put it in the bag that I noticed it had no reaction to the magnet I keep in the pouch.

I went to take a picture of it and the battery in my camera is dead, so I will post one of it tomorrow. It weighs 5 grams.

What is it that you posted?

While on subject of metallurgy,I am curious.
Nickel is magnetic, but how about nickel silver, and German Silver?
Or are these more or less the same?
I have found Stainless steel that was burned may be magnetic,is that because the carbon was burned out of it?
Thanks and Happy Hunting,Mont

PS Jewelry is always a nice find

Sorry Treasure_Hunter, but that looks like gold to me. Maybe its my monitor here, but I don't think its brass. Just doesn't have that "look" to it. Seem's more like 18K, or a very well alloyed 14K gold than anything.

Just found out what it is. Kinda sorta. It's the logo for Chanel. They make all sorts of things with the cc logo. Earings, hair claws, bracelets, pendants, etc. Only problem is, that they do make some gold plated items. Actually there might be another problem. Every one I've seen one eBay had the cc interwoven, so that one c went through the other instead of being a single flat surface.

There are also cheapo Chanel "inspired" products out there that might be "knockoff's". The real Chanel jewelry is expensive. Yours might be real and just old, or it might be something I haven't seen in my search.

I couldn't tell by the picture how big that logo is, but it might be worth the effort to have someone look at it who has a way of testing it.

Hope this helps.

Take the picture outside in the sunlight with camera set for outdoors, no flash, should show proper color. :)
Any markings on backside?

Question answered>>>

The reason a nickel will not stick to a magnet is simple....Nickel itself is magnetic, but there is to little in our 5 cent coin.

Ok, dumb question, if nickel is magnetic, how come a nickel won't stick to a magnet?

By the way - neat find!!

Thats the second picture I've seen of an item that looked like gold because of lighting. Still worth some cash though if it really is silver.

I think he means it is the color silver, with no corrosion, more like non-magnetic stainless steel or nickel plated.
