Re: What is your best " free box " find?

Wow this is a tough one for me, I have CRS. Gonna have to say scrap metal. Unless you count my $2000 plus dumpster dive...

Like Sean, I dont know if this counts, but on Sunday I picked up 2 A/C window units on the curb 2 blocks from my house.

I picked up a partial box of silver plated Oneida flat ware. There was one sterling tea spoon and one sterling table spoon mixed in, both from separate sets. Total was just under 2 oz of sterling :)

Back in the day I snagged a plastic log cabin play house. I power washed it and my kids played in it for a few years. I ended up selling it for $20 :icon_thumleft:

As far as free at a sale goes, the best recent find was a Charles Sawyer hand colored photograph that sold for $92.50 if I remember correctly, it's been a few months. It wasn't in the free box but it was free.

I purchased a 1950's Rolleiflex 2.8 camera for $80.00 from an estate sale. The seller then told me they had a lens hood for it that they would throw in. I said "Sure, thank you". It was in mint condition, in the original leather case, and worth $100.00 - 150.00 by itself.

I once had a lady that had out jewelry and there was a lot of sterling in the, i picked up earrings and rings, and even a little 12k. i gave her all the change in my pocket because i felt bad taking it for free.

over the summer i saw a box containing a handheld sega gamegear system and asked how much for it, the lady said she didnt know what it was or if it still worked so she said i could have it for free! I took it home, took out the crusty batteries and put new ones in and she works like a charm! even had a game in it still!

I can't remember much either, but a few low dollar scores come to mind:

I was at an auction, and a guy pulled 3 albums out of 5 boxes of records, and then gave me the 5 boxes. I sold the albums for $1-$2 each, and probably cleared $350 on the deal.

I just scored a super nice commercial Rubbermaid mop bucket and ringer out of a commercial clean out...I have it priced at $35, plus $3 each for the mops. About a $50 score all total.

I did score a large box of plumbing parts and fittings...probably about 40 pounds of new #1 copper. I still have it, but it should easily be $100+ box.

I had a yard sale last Sunday starting at 7:30am. By 10:45, 1/2 the stuff I had left was free. It took til 11:45 before someone came and cleaned me out.
Now I feel free. I'm NOT going to buy vast piles of junk any more! Still, I made $218. That was the best time I ever gave away stuff for free. That's what you meant, right? :tard:

Anyone who would pay that price for Shades
would Probably loose Interest in them
after that.

Like a person who Buys a Maserati then has a fit
when someone bumps it with their door, Stands on the roof
for a Photo Op, or
slides down the hood to see their reaction :dontknow:.

first edition 1935 "Voodoo Fire in Haiti" from a free box of books. Great condition, sells for $35 (I'm keeping it). very neat book

a few wks ago, i found a diplomatic passport in a dumpster near the old alameda navy base, along w/ some other really cool stuff. the passport sold on ebay for $260. it belonged to a captain who was in charge of the pacific fleet back in the 50s. there were hundreds and hundreds of visas/exits/entries - over 60 additional pages had been added onto the thing. i also found some very detailed navigation maps of hong kong and other parts of the pacific. and i also found the beautiful wabi-sabi bowl i posted on one of these forums. also there were some nice brochures for 1930ish studebakers - in perfect condition. here's a pic of one of the covers of one of them and a page from oneblue coupe sm file.webp.silver cover sm file.webp

Well if a free box is a dumpster, I pulled out an old 50's chrome and red stool people sat on at ice cream parlors. Cleaned it up and swaped it for two Peace Dollars last week
