I have come across a old trunk it seems. I have no idea what or who can help me with this!. But does it look familiar to anyone? Or is it a toy trunk for just that? My first post. And I hope this is the right place for this.
First of all, welcome to the Forums. This is a great community that interacts well together. I hope you enjoy it. I’m a little confused on your questions. I can’t imagine that it’s original design was specifically for the sole purpose of storing toys. It appears to be a fairly standard travel-type trunk. Maybe someone will ID the maker and approximate year of manufacturing. Thanks for posting. 🍀
 

I agree it looks like a regular steamer trunk.
there is sometime a small shelf which fits into the bottom rim area
