Great find! Perhaps you could take it to a jeweler or a synagogue for some firsthand advice. There may be no hope for the contents but one can hope.

If you take it out you may find something very interesting. If it falls apart than you didnt really loose anything because you never knew what it was to begin with

I must tell you that I don't know much about such things but I don't believe that you should let it dry out completely. You might should keep it in a box and keep a wet sponge in there. If you try to unroll it dry it may crumble. Use a plastic food container with a seal able lid. So not wet the sponge too much. You just want to keep it from really drying out. Don't store it near a radiator or other heat source. Find a university with some sort of archeology department. They may want to see it or they might tell you how to handle it. Good luck.

That's a very important find.
Take it to a museum and have them pull it out and preserve it.
I agree DON'T let it dry out.
Keep it in a humidor or like Haldean said in a sealed box with a damp sponge.
Good luck don't be in a rush.
It's been in there this long a little longer won't hurt...

You are looking at a relic with today's eyes.
How long ago did Muslims walk the area it was recovered in?
Who besides a Muslim could have carried it and why?
When were many Muslims killed S.W. of you most recently? And were any personal items taken from them?

If your family possessed such a relic , and you ended up with it would you keep it? Maybe some one discarded it.

Answers do not always come easy with things found where they seem out of place.

History knows how your item traveled. Who made it, And even who it belonged to originally.

I , a half world away do not know that history. Should I?

I just remembered when I was in Africa among the moslem's and other Africans, that they would carry around their necks and upper arms leather and chained charm containers with written script and also animal parts to protect the individual from bad luck and evil spirits. It is possible that the script written on the silk scroll may be what you have.
