I found this at an old abandoned townsite, along with horseshoes, wagon hubs, old iron relics, the town was abandoned years ago, the present owner found a dime dated, (1909), This object is solid brass, heavy, & had what looks like a twisted wick inside it, the top has threads for something to screw on.

The only thing I can think of is a large buggy lamp , Any ideas?

Top pic is the top, second pic is bottom, third pic shows wick? fourth pic shows
inside view.

Kerosene lantern circa 1940s-50s, if there's a railroad nearby could have been a standard issue, for railman. Still a nice find though. Prior to then the wick material was different. It's also possible that lamp is older with newer wick material. :)

Maybe it's a stink pot . You know those round things they would fill with kerosine an use as a road flare ?

Thanks for all your ideas, there is a railroad nearby, but didn't come through until 1902, & this town was laid off earlier, as a coal mine & sawmill town.
It doesn't look large enough for a floor lamp base, any more ideas?

Got me stumped,

Thanks Angelo, for the info, it does look similar to mine, but says it came in tin only, & mine is heavy brass.
