I was detecting on the beach and found this cross and wreath with rough Norske translation on some of the words. What did this come from? Any ideas? I also found this other strange piece today. I'm thinks it's off a garmet of some sort. It's about a inch and half long and all 3 off the half moons swivel, it seems to be made of brass.

The thingy with the swivels is the part of a set of suspenders located at the center of the back. If I recall correctly it was patented by the makers of President brand suspenders.

Welcome toTreasureNet!

Thank you for the info on the suspender piece! I'll keep posting more glad I found this site!

The cross is a super COOL find. Researching the source would provide an awesome story. Very nice suspender clip too. Welcome to the best sight on ALL THINGS treasure hunting. Post often!:hello:

Cool find ! The translation will be helpful - are you sure the cross is silver ? Looks a bit brassy to me ( discoloration notwithstanding )

Flooring inspector Johan Grundt is what I get on first line - Interesting!

I took this piece to a local historian/jewelry he verified it was silver for me.

My jewler friend verified it's silver for me. I found this in salt water conditions to and it's this well preserved and non magnetic.I'm going with its silver for now.

I agree, not silver. But an interesting bit of history.

To answer your question "what is this cross"...

Tis a "baptism cross".

I also agree with "not silver".

What did he verify the wreath or the cross? I would question his verification of this find if he's telling you the cross is silver.

I am just going on digging up thousands of pieces of brass over decades and my fare share of silver.

Silver(sterling) usually doesn't leach out green. The cross has every indication of being made of a brass alloy.

Cool recovery of history though, congrats.

Non-ferrous metal is non magnetic.

I have hundreds of pieces that look the same as this that are 100% brass alloy. Your jeweller friend has the means of testing this piece, besides his eyes?

Roughly says:

For [/to]
Flooding-inspector* Johan Grundt

From

Drammens wood-traders

19/1 1898
*Rough translation, in lack of a better term.
I can't really find a good definition/translation for the word "Flødningsinspektør".

What you need to know is that Drammens in Norway during the 1800's was an important source of wood.
Not sure if they built ships there to, but this seems like Johan here was part of testing the ships for leaking hulls or he somehow took part in getting the wood to the fjord for further transport. At least this would be my guess.

Very nice finds! :occasion14:

I'm unsure of the metal. The picture quality is not the best and the pics differ from right when it came out of the ground to cleaned up and dry the back side is a lighter color differing from brass I've found in the same spot. The I looked some more in the same area and didnt come up with any other parts of what this was part of originally unfortunately. Thank you everyone for your input on these items I appreciate all input.27476.jpeg
