For reference, the smallest item is a dog tax tag from 1928, and the padlock next to it is about 3-4 inches. I have no idea what I dug up, but I'm assuming some sort of scrap metal?
 

Maybe top of an old wood stove that had a chimney in the middle?

A general rule of thumb I try to remember is that if it doesn't have any distinguishing design features, no lettering of any sort (manufacturer's marks, raised or etched lettering), no decorative sculpting, and it's not made of a more expensive metal (although this last one isn't always a factor - copper pipes, lead plates, aluminum siding and whatnot), it's probably just iron junk. If you care enough to experiment and see, you can always soak it in apple cider vinegar for a few days ~OR~ use it as a test piece for an electrolysis bath.
