I found this big hunk of what looks like coal today at the beach.

When I picked it up, I noticed some sections that looked like metal, when the light hit them they shone like gold.

I Managed to get a small peice of the goldish colored metal out of the black coal like chunk. It will not stick to a magnet, so I don't think it is fools gold.

Here are some more mics of the areas of gold like metal. The pictures really don't capture the metallic shine that it gives off.

Does anyone have a clue what either thing is?

C'mon you guys - where is your curiosity? Take a hammer and give that baby about 40 whacks. Then you can collect the other material (the "gold") and see if it is unusually heavy for its size. I bet it's just clam poo. :tard:
No, dont break it. It will lose value. Remember the Phipsfolly's Emerald found on Treasure Beach? Sold on E-Bay for big bucks stuck in a clump of shellrock and sand..

Hey out of curiosity and not wanting to beleive that it isn't something made from metal, I tested the little metal detector. With a good size piece of foil it beeps but if I break the foil into a smaller peice like the size in this black substance it does nothing.

It is possible that a cheap detector will not pick up small gold...very possible. I had one that could not pick up thin gold chains.

That's different, it was obviously an emerald. This is just some weird gunk that got caught between layers of burned wood. If it were gold, the color is almost unmistakeable. But you can string along the newbie if you so choose. ;D :D
At this point, TT, we just dont know. We only have pictures.

A copper nail alone is worthless, but stuck in as piece of shipweck wood would have some value. Gold even more value.

I will take it to a local rock and gem store and see what they say and then to a jeweler so they can laugh at me for bringing them petrified poo!

I will post what I find out.

You cannot rely on a cheapo detector to determine gold. That's why gold machines were created. ::) The only sure way is to take the wood to a jeweler and ask to have the "metal" tested. Usually there is no charge, and that will settle the matter.
agreed. We were trying to determine if it is even metal.

Yes, please do. I'd be interested in knowing. You know, I hope, that I'm only teasing about the clam poo. (Maybe it's fish poo) However, if it were gold I'm pretty sure you would see that unmistakeable glint.
It does that is the only reason I kept it, I just could not get the glint in the pictures. I post an update tomorrow.

Looks like melted aluminum sticking to a charred piece of wood - possibly from melted cans thrown onto a beach bonfire/BBQ ?

On a fresh surface (when dry) see if it will write on paper. Opps I see you have done this.

Kind of looks like graphite which does write on paper- Pure form of carbon but graphite is light not heavy.
However, iron will turn to a form of graphite in seawater(old cannonballs have this). Perhaps this
is old iron which thru time has partially changed to graphite.
