ID Help:
Howdy yall!
I need help identifying or figuring out what this item is that I found last winter at a stone well on my ranch in Cooke County Texas. The site has yielded finds that I can date from 1879-1950s. I'm quite sure the site was either a share croppers shack or horse barn due to the high number of horse tack that I've found.
Anyways here's the find description. It is a broken copper "plate" that measures 2"x1.25" and is about the same thickness as a zinc penny.
The name appears to read Rebecca P Hanche but I'm not sure.
What puzzles me most, is that I feel the piece is already too thin to be a press plate. I mean at 1.52mm thick, the engraving just isn't deep enough to work that way.
Here are some pictures for yall to see.
Plate with a 1920 half for scale.
Closer view of the plate. Image has been flipper horizontally to show the name as read from left to right.
Close up view of the name as read from left to right. As you can see, Rebecca is pretty legible. The "P Hanche' part is what I have guessed at sort of. The P seems pretty clear, and the H also seems pretty clear. Get your magnifying glasses out lol
Thanks and happy hunting yall!
