What is this button

I found this a wile ago but I am still unable to identify what or who created or how old it is any help please. It has clear defined stars on it and some letters but I am un able to understand what they are and there meaning any help would be really appreciated.

Also how wold I clean it it is gold plated and at one time was gold plated all the way around and not just on the back

EDIT: The below dates are undoubtedly more accurate, as mine were not from a source with any known reliability.
Surely someone will chime in soon about cleaning it, if not I'm sure there's a thread about it here somewhere.

Here is more-detailed info about your button:

It is known as a brass 1-piece "flatbutton." That basic type was manufactured almost entirely for use on Civilian clothing -- although a few did get used on Military uniforms. Brass 1-piece buttons whose backmark is written in indented (not raised) lettering date from approximately 1810 through the 1830s. Most button-backmarks have the name of a tailor-shop or clothing dealing. Yours, instead, has the name of the button's manufacturer. The firm of Robinsons Jones & Co. was located in Attleboro MA, and was only in business under that name from 1826 through November 1834, when Jones sold his interest in the company. (Info source about your button's backmark is the book "American Military Button Makers And Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates" by William F. McGuinn & Bruce S. Bazelon.)

The term "Treble Gilt" in a button's backmark means triple goldplating.
