I have had this thing a while and have not yet identified it. Found a home site built in 1850, and also served as a headquarters camp during the Civil War. The dime is for size reference. It is heavy cast brass. It is not a fork of any kind (tuning, salad, olive, etc). That's all I know. I appreciate any help in figuring this one out. 005.JPG

Doe's it have a groove in between the "U" shaped area? Maybe an antique hand mirror?

No, there are no grooves or channels in there. The "points" are blunt and rounded, too.

Is it flat or slightly bent?

It is flat. Not bent at all.

I have investigated the wood stove lid lifter theory before but haven't found anything similar. Not enough to rule it out as a possibility though.
