What is this brass doohicky?

Detected a field yesterday and pulled out 2 items which I have questions about, hope someone recognises these things. Here's a picture with a penny for size comparison, with detailed pics at the bottom:

First, the square-shaped button, do you think its not a button at all, but a piece of a cufflink? And secondly, the odd-shaped brass item, what is it for? At first I thought it might be some huge brass tack of some kind, but it doesn't have a point and it looks like it was made exactly the way it still is (doesn't look like it was bent by a plow or hammer...).

Thanks Casca, for such a quick reply. It's strange how many cufflinks, buttons, and coins are floating around in this field... maybe the town held a fair or carnival in it at one time, which might explain why there's so many.
