Anyone have any idea of what this is?

This was found in Yorktown, VA along with colonial buttons, civil war miniballs, and a 1694 W&M Half Penny.

I originally thought it was a rifle butt plate, but now am reconsidering that...

It has a slight curve to it, 4 places that look like it was nailed on, and I just noticed three tiny holes when I cleaned it up a little..

Any help would be appreciated

Dave

A wild guess...The three standing feathers are the heraldry for the Prince of Wales. The shape and prongs on the back may indicate it was a brass badge attached in a vertical position to a shoulder belt on a British uniform, circa 1770's to War of 1812. The three holes look professionally drilled, and may have had small dangling adornments or feathers. Now...wouldn't that be cool? (I am a hopeless romantic.) I hope you get a definitive answer from an expert soon. Sub 8-)

That would be amazing! It was found only steps from the British coin I found

Possibly a side plate for a musket?

It looks like an emblem for a period trunk. Not a part from a musket.

It's hard to judge the size, but it has the same type fasteners as colonial era saddle/harness bosses.

Please post a picture of this with your 1694 half penny. Would love to see it and it will also show the size of this find.

RebYeller, Congrat's to you on some incredible finds. I wish I could be of some help on ID of the brass piece. It is both cool looking and old. Best of luck to you in getting it ID'd.

I am thinking some sort of saddle tack. Very nice find.
