Just got back from an absolutely AMAZING hunt with my Dad and I am SHOCKED!!:metaldetector:

We have a local permission in Yorktown, VA, yes that Yorktown!! There is a church there that was used there since well before the Civil war, and is still used today. In the past we have found miniballs, buttons and even a SNY Belt Plate. Today I was using a new program for my XP Deus, and decided to try out a trashy area that we have purposely avoided in the past. I am so Glad we did! I started off finding a few miniballs, so I decided to stick to a 50' x 50' area around those. 10 minutes later I got a really high tone on the Deus right next to a small tree. I dug it and 10-11 inches later, out pops a coin. What I saw almost stopped my heart, not one bust looking right, but two! A 1694 William and Mary Half Penny!!! I literally fell over with excitment and immediately called Parsonwalker, and Mudduck to confirm what I had found!!

On the way out I found this, about 10 inches down. I am hoping one of you guys or gals will be able to identify it for me. I originally thought it was a rifle but plate, but Parsonwalker disagrees. Anyone know???

I also found a load of Flat buttons, a few more miniballs, a random 1945 war nickle, and a harmonica reed.

Overall, the Best detecting day I've had in a long time, and I was blessed to have this amazing day with my Dad!

Thanks for reading!

I grew up in Yorktown, just not that Yorktown.

Yeah, I might be a bit envious.

A very nice rare coin
Congrats on the W & M

Awesome finds! Heck, I would be stoked with the miniballs :laughing7:

Coins like you scored are hard to come by.

That saddle/rifle butt piece looks very cool...and very old.

I live in NC and have drove through VA many times, and I am always pondering the history that was paved over while I do so.

This hunt and these finds have to be even more special to have shared them with your dad. Great job guys and thanks for sharing.

Great find and condition on that baby! A W&M farthing was my first 1600's coin and the first thing I posted on Tnet 3 yrs ago! Unreadable date but the two busts let me age the coin, fortunately. That coin lit the detecting fire in me after returning to the hobby in my mid 40's, so it has very special significance for me...

Awesome hunt! 1600's coin in that condition is so far out of my imagination that I am speechless. . . congrats!!!

Thats incredible! Hard to get an old date like that here in the states.

That's a great coin. Fantastic shape for it's age! Thanks for sharing.

Kurios1 made the best comment yet. I know you are curious about the etched brass (and so am I) but much like the war nickel, people are so speechless about that coin, that they're not even bothering to guess about the brass. Try "What Is It?" if you haven't already. Experts troll that forum wanting to be the first to correctly nail something.

Now . . . about that COIN. It is totally inappropriate to text me a picture of something like that while I am at work. There are laws against cruel and unusual punishment. But I'm flattered that you wanted me to be in on it so early in the game. Thanks man. I have found a lot of CW relics, but the 1600s? Never! You predated my earliest finds by 50 years! Admittedly, I don't know much about coins. But I know that something over 300 years old that you can still READ is unbelievably remarkable, and I know that coin is RARE over here. What STORY could that thing tell????

I rarely vote banner . . . just because I figure others are sharper than I am about what deserves to be there. But that DATE? That CONDITION? That LOCATION?? Holy cow. Banner vote IN.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :icon_thumleft:

Amazing find... and I drive through the battlefields in Yorktown everyday just wishing I could stop and swing my detector.

Banner.

Well done.

So, the consensus over on the "what is it" page is that the brass piece is some sort of part of a saddle, but that it is super old. So who knows, still a beautiful find. I love it!

Congratualtions on the great relic and old copper coin hunt! :notworthy:

Welcome to the 1600's club...admission key and membership card on the way! :occasion14:

Wow! Not often that you see a W&M copper dug in the US with any detail on it--much less a date!
