What is it?

My wife has an old wooden box that appears to have been used for carrying something. It is approximately 2.5" deep by 6" wide by 5.5" high with a metal loop type handle that swivels. It also has a wooden cover/lid that pivots to open. The carving is quite crude and we have no idea what it was used for or even if it is actually old. Attached are several pictures of the item.

Any information that you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks

The inside appears to have a residue that is similar to creosote or something similar. Thanks

maybe an old "grease box". used in horse and wagon times. might be a remake or might be original...
also might be archers grease box. used to make the release smoother. equal parts suet and beeswax. they were usually fancy though.
the last seems more probable...
is there any smell to it? can you get some of the "creosote like" stuff out and look at it?
