Its attached by a screw. I guess it went on lapel?

It’s used as a symbol of knowledge/learning. A lantern symbol is used the same way, commonly in the coat of arms of schools. I think it relates to late nights studying, as in the old saying of “burning the midnight oil”, though that can mean working as well as studying.
