I was looking for arrow heads in a field here in Ohio.

I've found arrow heads, scrapers, bird points and one axe in this field.

This find is round but not perfectly round.
It weighs 9 1/2 ounces, more that you would think by looking at it.
Its 2 inches tall and 1 3/4 wide.

It is smooth, has some imperfections, Its some kind of ball.

For what it's worth that doesn't look like concrete it looks like a large clay marble to me

It's concrete byproduct, so I'm told. If you remember, I told you I thought it was limestone. Lime is in cement. If I remember correctly, we used lime, sand, water, and then the powder stuff for mixing concrete. I saw my pops mix it when I was really young. Who knows what it really is. The people around my farm all think indian artifacts are found on reservations. I kid you not!

Here it is beside an early American salt glazed marble. The do feel similar. It probably is an early settler marble. I just wanted to see if any one else had heard of lining roads with round stones. Sounds like a cock and bull story to me. Just think about drinking a 40 of old English then having to walk down a road of marbles. I doubt it. However, I hate to have any doubt about a find. I would hate to label a "gravel alternative" as a significant piece of history. Lol

Often when constructing a gravel driveway, a larger, or over-sized material will be put down first, so the finer materials don't get pushed down into the soil so easily. The shape wouldn't effect the use in that application. The little ol lady may not have known all the particulars. A portion of my driveway has fist to head sized rocks under the gravel because of the soil I have.

Thanks for your input Quito. Cement is what I meant to say. If it were concrete it may have a stick of rebar hanging out of it. Lol! I think what you describe in constructing a drive is the theory with these round pieces. However, as you mentioned shape or size would be irrelevant. If these were used in farm road construction, why do we need perfect round balls? Doesn't add up to me. I'm going down on the farm over the weekend. I'll dig in the area that supposedly has hundreds of these. If I find a large number of these, I'll toss this one back with them. I'll post what I find. By the way, original poster, sorry to rob your thread. I thought my piece was possibly the same as yours. I got out of hand! My apologies..

I live in Washington County Ga., the main industry here is mining Kaolin,a clay that was deposited along the shoreline and I quiet lagoons of an ancient ocean, there is a Fall Line that runs roughly from Augusta,Ga to Columbus,Ga.,every creek and river along this line has a waterfall along this line, this line roughly marks the shoreline of the ancient ocean, the Kaolin is a sedimentary clay that was deposited in the quiet lagoons, etc. of that ocean. To get to the clay you have to remove 50 to 100+/- of overburden, as a teenager we would swim etc in the mines that were closed, found shark teeth, sand dollars, shells, etc. My great uncle, who was very smart and a rock hound had several stones like yours that he found at the mine near Deepstep,Ga., he said they were stones from dinosaur belly, just like birds put sand in their craw to grind up food.I certainly am not an expert in that area but the moment I saw your stone those stones he had came to mind. Whatever it is it a cool stone and thanks for posting it. Best Wishes,Carl
