Retiredgun, the design in the center reminds me of a "knot" tamgha, a sort of seal or brand used by Islamic clans. Here is one on a silver dirham from the mint in Taraz, estimated date AH 706, or about 1306 A.D.

Note: I am posting the photo only to illustrate the "knot" tamgha, and am not suggesting any specific origin or age for your coin.

PBK thanks for the info and great link. The design does look like the one in the photo you posted. One of my uncles served in North Africa during WW2 so he may have given it to my Dad.
