Looks to me like a blacksmiths hardy. am trying to tell in the pictures if the shaft was originally square. Some early anvils had small hardy holes of 1/2", typical sizes, 5/8, 3/4, 1" depending on anvil size. Early ones were crude.

I was trhinking hardy too, but it looks like the shaft is welded to the square part. Hardy's are one solid piece.

Yeah.Because he/she is new and doesn't understand the board etiquette. You'd be surprised how many new members come across as rude and obnoxious. Fortunately for those noobs, most people on this site try cut new members some slack.
Sorry about that bartshop62! I did not mean to offend. I really thought I was creating my own thread... I am now trying to take it down because I did not intend to upset anyone or be rude, etc. However, I cannot figure out how to take it down. Again, very sorry. Just new to this and find the site quite confusing in terms of usability.
