So far i've been told its a Guard of some sort, but for what exactly ? Made by Scovill, with insignia on the back. which made Fasteners. Curious what this part played as in the civil war exactly...any ideas? thanks

Scovill made tie clips .. don't know if that is what it is or not, but might give a starting point.

Bump,
anyone? I'm completely lost with this one. I got it in my display case anyway at the moment.

It is brass.

Lol honestly and I know you won't even like the suggestion. But it looks like the brass contacts they put in electric bulb lamps in the socket. Think about how big bulbs were when electric first came out. The socket would have been big, that's why the two holes are gone. Might have been where it was connected with a rivet to the porcelain socket.

During war years companies produce all kinds of items that they normally wouldn't have. It could be ww1 era plus or minus 10 years. Remenaer the civil war ended only about 25 years before the start of ww1. Also electric came about 1890 to 1895 in the us. Here's a link to a website about scovill manufacturing they started in 1811 and used a lot of brass.

Thank you for that honest information. That kinda settles me.

Well i certainly do appreciate the extra input. It's just had me stuck that it was from a camp site, and scovill which later changed it's name to scoville with an 'e'.

Thank you. I think i'll keep it in the glass case for giggles.
