What in the world is this???

It looks like a fossil of a small shell but then there is other strange stuff. The bottom looks almost rusted and it looks layered. Also it is very light and almost seams like it's in the shape of silverware or even a bone. Te she'll shape has defined lines and is clearly a shell. I'm baffled, any help would be appreciated.

It's not metal it appears to be rock.

Looks like a fossil to me in a piece of dark & grainy looking river washed sedimentary sandstone. The real deal I would say as far as fossils go. Nice find.

That's so awesome! I only picked it up by chance didn't even see the shell at first. How old do you think it could be?

that is a big question and we can't answer it...too many variables not enough context...but suffice it to say, tens of millions of years old.

Agree! Fossil bivalve shell in matrix. Nice Find! You should be able to find more in the immediate area.
