What I didn't find today

Anything good or cool. I finally got the nerve up to go to this old house that was torn down last week. Spent about an hour and a half detecting. I found about four lumps of unidentifiable metal (squashed cans I think) and some type of tool which wasn't even buried but just laying in the grass! I'm hoping to go back with my husband to help me dig because there are a lot of really big tree roots that I can't get through by myself. What a bummer! I had such high expectations for this place too. I'm hoping to go back there tomorrow..........we'll see. For as old as this house was, I just can't believe that there is nothing there. Wish me luck!

No Surfrat, not yet. That's another thing that is making things difficult. I'm not very good at pinpointing with the detector and it takes forever to locate what I've dug. Right now I'm the winning bidder for one on ebay, but there's about 12 other people that are trying for it too. I think most of them are laying low until the time is counting down. We'll see.

Not to say this is the problem you're having. But as for myself, i'll sometimes have such high
expectations from a site, that i'll come away disapointed. But from that at times, i've found that it will have calmed me down, and after some thought i'll have a better picture of the site. And then made a return trip and often times did better. Good luck HH

Keep bidding on the pinpointers. I had to bid on 4 of them until I finally got the Bullseye II for a fair price.....and oh, be sure and check out shipping costs ahead of time. Some sellers try to make a huge profit just on the shipping. JG

Re: What I didn't find today

Thanks for all the advice guys. rvbvetter, I think you might be right. I started at the back of the property because I don't know if I should even be there. I was afraid the neighbors might have a problem with it so I tried to stay pretty low key. It was bad enough that I was carrying a big shovel Omni, I don't know if bringing a hatchet too would have brought too much unwanted attention. I'm not very good at digging plugs yet either. That's why I wanted to go for this site, because the ground was already all torn up from the bulldozers wrecking the house. Anyway, keep the advice coming because I find it very helpful!!!!

Practice that pinpointing Vickie. It makes all the difference in the world . Hit that site hared and hit it as often as you can. I had one down here and had a total of 9 hrs on over all the days I hunted it. I found something everyday. It was great practice and it ws fun . HH

Re: What I didn't find today

................Do not get discouraged.......Something IS there.....Tree roots can really mess with you.........They can push a coin to over a foot,,,,,,,,and then in just a few years it can be pushed back up to just 1-3 inches below the surface.......Have you ever dug a clad,or mem cent piece at 5-6 ",and then find silver at just 2 inches....It happens alot ! those roots re-arrange the furniture......Have Faith..................Something that you want is waiting for you there................H.H.

Re: What I didn't find today

take your ordinary small shovel - have yer hubby put it on a grinder u can make them razor sharp - also a pair of side cutters used to cut electrical wires are all i carry - these have tamed allot of roots for me anything bigger a keyhole saw works great - when u r trying to be covert - its tuff - heck when i am out in my own yard i create quite a stir - let alone working a property w/out permission hehe

Re: What I didn't find today

Hi Vicki it's there. I know why you didn't find it. Because when your hunting a spot you don't feal really comfortable with you tend to be listening for someone to yell. It takes some of your concentration away at spots like these. I bet if a neighbor would have come out and said it was fine you would concentrate more and find those old deep coins. Trust me I know I've been there. You tend to move to quickly at spots your not sure of. Wanna get something before your thrown out method. Keep at it and maybe know one will bother you.

If possibly just let a neighbor know what your doing so they don't get scared. Your a women also so people I think are less worried than if a strange man knocked on the door. Wish you luck take your time and slow down.

Re: What I didn't find today

WOW! You guys are so right about the uncomfortable feeling and rushing. I did go back today and felt a little more comfortable and no one bothered me so I did go up closer to the road where the house actually was.

Nana - You're right about going out alone. I really don't like it and it did take a lot of nerve on my part to go there. When you're knocking around these old places with a lot of trees, half of me tries to keep aware of my surroundings and who might be able to come up behind me. But then I get a signal and start digging, and I forget to keep an eye out! We're too vulnerable at times, especially if I've been doing a lot of digging (I use a big, giant, heavy shovel) and I get really tired and weak. Couldn't fight off a fly if I had to at times like that!

Keep the advice coming ya'll. I'm learning a lot!
