What does unopened & unsearched mean to you?

Some of you guys have talked about how good CRH was in the old days and how you would routinely get a few silvers per roll. Well in the beginning of September I saw this listing on EBay. Quarter's - Bank Rolled, Unsearched/Unopened I was a little leery at first but I looked at the sellers feed back: seakayaker (191) and it was 100% positive with good reviews. Well to make a long story shorter I bid and won. Being the only bidder should have warned me. I paid $14.95 plus $5 shipping for a $10 roll of quarters. That hurts paying more than face value for any coin.

I got the coins right away because I used PayPal and as soon as I opened the envelope something started to smell fishy. The roll was not tight, like a fed wrapped roll and one end had tape on the side, the crimping was very loose and the wrapper paper was torn slightly. All signs the roll had been opened, searched and refilled.

Here are the two pictures this guy named Gene posted on his auction. The roll is cropped tight so no ends show and only one end is shown the one that was not opened. His file name for one roll is 1976 Quarters Mixed Roll 2.jpg if these are unsearched how does he know they are 1976? Maybe the 1976 quarters would not sell so he made up this other story.

Here is the actual closed-auction link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270161879414 His auction says he lives in Lake Havasu City, Arizona but the envelope came from Washington State.

Here are the real pictures I just took. Notice the tape holding the roll closed.

I have not opened up the roll yet so I do not know if there is silver inside or not. I have sent two messages to him so far and no response at all. I will send one more message this weekend. It will not be as polite as the first two. Then it is off to EBay to see what they can do. I have not left any feedback yet. I want to think about what I will say. I want to discourage as many sales as I can. I gave him the benefit of the doubt twice and no answer. To me, that is as guilty as OJ in Vegas.

If the roll had come in as tight as we are all used to I was going to have an opening contest on this board. The first to guess the correct number of silvers would win something of little or no value. Who knows it may just be loaded with silver but I don't have a good feeling about it.

one of my supply banks roll their coins like this and use tape often if rolls are loose. I have pulled silver (dimes) and wheat's from them. It is a small bank and does not handle much coin I can get a little from them but they are not my main supply bank. I have watched them roll coins and it is so slow that I feel sorry for the ladies rolling coins it is a little faster then by hand but not much. it would be impossible to tell if they were searched or not if you did not get it directly from the bank.

Also one thing you could possibly try is to weigh the roll and see if it weighs more than an entire clad roll. That way you would at least know is there were any silver quarters in there. Not sure how accurate of a scale you would need though.

Re: What does unopened & unsearched mean to you?

My guess is it is a roll of quarters as purchased at the bank in 70's....or at least that is what the description leads me to believe. Now if the roll has banged around or been moved around at all since that, it is possible that the end would rip like that without being searched. I have had rolls fresh from the bank in a fed sealed box show up like that.

If you originally bought the roll and had planned on opening it, I say just open it and see what's in it. And if still unsatisfied that it wasn't as described, then complain. If it really was from the 1970s. The roll should contain coins from that era in great shape (compared to today) at a minimum, if not older coins.

Unless you open the roll and find coins that obviously don't match the description, I doubt Ebay can or will do anything about it.

A note on ebay purchases: I have a relative who has a hand in the coin business on ebay that both buys and sells and has had both hits and misses and even gotten burned for a few thousand dollars on one deal by a counterfeit coin(s). I don't remember exactly how that issue got resolved, but I got the impression the consequences of the path they followed led to some unexpected benefits. I don't remember what they got back instead, but I don't believe they got their money back directly (I think it was some ebay benefits of some type).

Good luck with whatever path you choose.

That was my idea also. I sent two messages that did not accuse him of cheating and he ignored both. That is what makes me sure he tried to pull a fast one. I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt only because of his feed back numbers.

It means unopened and unsearched. I think you have a cause to return the roll anyway since the other end looks like a Canadian 25c piece. I think he used the file name 1976 since one of the end coins is 1976.

Best of luck,

Re: What does unopened & unsearched mean to you?

That Canadian quarter should be worth quite a bit more than .25 US as the dollar is tanking!! 1 Canadian dollar is now worth 1 US dollar. Hasn't been like that since 1976!! It kinda looks searched to me but I could be wrong.

Re: What does unopened & unsearched mean to you?

Sorry, but my definition of "unopened & unsearched" is "don't believe everything you read".
;D

Re: What does unopened & unsearched mean to you?

I doubt if I would have bought them. Even with silver up to $13.39 an ounce like it is now, you would have to find a minimum of 4+ silvers in that roll to make up for the $9.95 you paid over face. Then you gotta figure that you won't get spot if you sold them so there would have to be more silver in the roll. Odds aren't good.
