I called Home Depot (Sacramento, CA) and none of them carry it - so I will have to order it direct form Pro Handle or from Kellyco. Thanks for the post.

Well then - I will just order it! Thanks.

I would like to see the Miller Scoops offered again, I have been using mine for 15yrs and you can't kill them. A 10" s/s scoop that takes ever bit of abuse you can dish. Maybe that was the problem, they were built too good and didn't wear out!

Hopefully my scoop man will be working on a miller type scoop soon. I just bought a old miller scoop for him to use as a pattern, only difference is his will have several more holes, and hopefully as strong. I could have used a miller friday or a handle, hunting in the bay requires the hoop handle for the torque and with one you don't get a mouth full of water when you reach down to pull your scoop out of the muck.........joe

I googled Miller sand scoop and I didn't see anything that resembled a sand scoop only Pooper Scoopers.
How about attaching a picture of what a Miller Sand Scoop looks like.
Thanks, Guy

Thats a Big retriver, Got one just about the same 15 long, 8.8 x 8.5 all aluminum, weighs in about 8 pounds, almost the same weight as the SS reilys, At the time I thought it was a great Idea, Bigger the better........figured I would not miss many with that baby in the water, wrong...pulling back on her in the wet deep sand the handle would start to bend {1.5 inch 6061 .083 wall tube} and full of wet sand, it ain't happening........Before I take her back to the beach, she's has to lose a few inch's....joe

The welding guy told me my shaft wouldn't bend either after 4 months it was bent and had metal fatigue failure at the basket and brace. I solved this by cutting off the fatigued metal and then finding a broom handle the same length and diameter as the inside diameter of my shaft and had to sand some of it down a little as I pounded it into the shaft!!!! It took some work but it has not bent in 3 years!!!! Oh the weight is around 15 pounds. After 5 plus hours in the water I'm walking a lil crooked. :tongue3:

What I wanted in a water scoop were the features I'd seem on my hunting partners scoop. The ability to allow the basket to swing freely on the handle which makes sifting in water a breeze, it also makes breaking the suction from the ocean floor alot easier due to pivoting at the front of the basket.
The scoop is made by me though I wont take credit for the design.

I love my Beach Brute but love it even more with the adding of a stainless steel lip to it. That stainless lip digs in the sand better and also mud has a harder time sticking to it.

I also recommend taking out the sheet metal screws and drilling the handle all the way through and add a stainless bolt and nylock nut. Ditto on the support screws.

Veg,

The handle design is cool! Talk us thru using your scoop. Do you clip the basket to the handle everytime before you dig.
Does handle stay clipped to bucket while digging, or does it come "free" while digging.
Once you've got a bucket of bottom and your lifting does the bucket always swing down into the "sifting position"
Very interesting design!

I'm suprised no one has yet mentioned that being able to breakdown the scoop for air travel is a desired trait. I like to bring my Excal with me when I travel on business (when I'm near the water anyway). My last two 2-piece scoops couldn't take the heavy, fine sand of Siesta Key - each bent badly before finally failing at the bottom weld.

Does anyone make a heavy duty, 2-piece scoop that could fit in a suitcase?

I have a trip coming up to Barcelona, Spain next month!

Thanks!

- Tom

Beach Brute II can be broken down into 2 pieces....You will not be bending it up, be sure to get the stainless lip for it, it has to be ordered seperate. If you call RTG (Reily Treasure Gold), they may make you one with the lip already on it.

There are several others that are sold as just the basket and you purchase a handle (shovel or post hole digger handle) when you get to where your going.....

TomS, I would look into the RTG Beach scoop Deluxe #701, by Reilly Treasure Gold http://www.rtgstore.com/rtgscoops.htm

I use the RTG Beachmaster but it is a one piece handle now though mine used to be two piece. They get frozen if you don't take them apart an grease them all the time. They have many others to suit your fancy. Depending how much bending you want to do the smaller one hand jobbies would fit in a bag easy.

Here is my prototype for moding the Sun Spot. It sets the handle to 20 degree's. I am still looking for the right hardware for the finished product, and I will marine epoxy the shim and some other minor tweaks. Digging in the backyard it feels rock solid. This weekend I will test it in the water. So far the new angle feels awesome. 1st pic is before mod., the rest after mod.
Also, even with the shim and longer hardware the scoop still weighs less than 6 pounds. HH.
