Capt. Dom, I think you kind of said it without directly saying it... But just to be clear, you're saying that you guys do drill some pieces to be worn as jewelry?

I will try and answer the "holed" questions fairly and accurately.

short answer: yes

It is a miss-guided concept - classical archeologists try to enforce - that all "artifacts" especially those recovered from the sea are sacrosanct or should otherwise be "untouchable" by the average "joe'. .............. If they want to wear the coin and they can not afford an expensive gold or silver wrap - who gives a flying crap if a small hole is drilled through the coin so they may wear it??? .............. I don't think anyone should think they will be denied entrance at the "pearly gates" or damned to eternal fire for holing a coin.

Where most of the smaller holed coins come from is "belly dancers" belts!

Silver has a distinct "ring" to it and the better belly dancers figured this
out long ago!

Here is a bigger one that would have bruised her hips! ARH...

I know this is a older post BUT.

My take on the Hole issue with Spanish coins.

As a Sailor myself, putting a Hole in the coin by the sailors of the 1600's wouldn't be to out of the box for me to understand the Question of Why?.
We still do it. Sharks teeth, Coins of a location of were you sailed to etc.
I met a sailor that was English that had come back from Africa that had enough gold to strain his neck with the gold coin & chain along with diamonds. Before Bling was cool!

They could show those on the beach (Land Lovers & Women) that they where most likely in a position of a Job, money, and ready to spend some money. Not much has changed since those days.
You don't see many women running after a broke sailor!
