What Detector to buy?

Hi:
I'm trying to decide on the best detector. I would like to buy one that's versatile for as many different metals and sensitive to deeper depths. I plan on doing most if not all on land. Any suggestions? Also, I'm sure the reconditioned ones are a much better buy as opposed to factory new.

Thanks,

Anna

Every major manufacturer makes machines tailor-fit to your specifications. Metal detecting geeks argue about the technical minutiae till the cows come home but for a beginner, none of that matters. You can get an entry-level machine for dirt cheap- that will outperform top-top end machines of 25 years ago- then just get out there and do it.

If you already have some basic experience with MD'ing and know it's something you're passionate about taking to the next level, I'd suggest looking at the mid-range of Tesoro products. I really like the Vaquero.

If you're totally new and just testing the waters, don't spend a lot of money on a machine just yet. A Tesoro Compadre, an Ace 250, etc are good choices to get your feet wet without laying out too much cash on something that will wind up collecting dust in a closet or sold for a loss on craigslist a year from now. Metal Detecting starts out the same for everyone, but only maybe 20% stick with it.

hi i bought a garrett ace 250 used it for about four months and sold it, and bought a fisher f2, i find the f2 to be better than the ace 250 because it gives you a number reading so you can choose to dig it or not, plus for 215.00 you get a 4" coil and a pinpointer free, the ace you dont get the free items for 212.00.

welcome to the mding.

Anna hi,

You didn't say how much your budget was ? I'll agree F2 is the best bang for the buck in the lower priced detectors.

reconditioned makes me nervous, most of the ones I have seen with that description are wierd brands. I would stay clear of Viper trident or what ever thay are calling them these days. There is a reason so many are reconditioned. The major brands don't usually have many of those.

Tnet is a great source of info for all kinds of treas hunting, read all that you can on the subject, and make your decision.

hello Anna, and welcometoa great hobby. as i am just as new to this exciting sport ans you are i found alot of info at kellyco also, there i was able to compare the differant detectors i was looking at all at once to see the differances. good luck and happy hunting, lokk forward to hearing about you first finds. michael

Whites or tesoro stay away from the ace 250 the bell tone will drive batty and it false a lot and the dept is off on targets they don't work good around here.
