The shipwrecks (2) are probably dating 1683. The artifact had a leather strap attached that could be hung around the neck or maybe the belt. The identiy of the artifact could possibly help proving the identity of the shipwrecks. the shipwrecks have not been excavated yet.

Snuff container? It'd be worth big dough if it dated from the age you talking about.

Where was the strap attached? Do you know which end is actually 'up'? How much cleaning was done on it? As suggested before, more pics from different angles might be helpful.

I think it is a snuff container too, I saw one on antque road show once, but not like that........it was kind of like it, the same build, but only yours is way different looking. If it came from a sailor of some kind, im sure it has something to do with Tobacco or a mind bending drug. Most sailors are hooked on some sort of thing. I think it is a unwritten rule that all sailors must abuse tobacco of some kind. I know i do. Brad

It's cool whatever it is. I'm not so sure it's a snuff box. Are you holding it upside down? Those look like strap holders toward the bottom of the photo which would indicate that it hangs the other way? But I dunno. Let us know what you find out.
