What coils do you recommend i use to find old coins?

Hey guys. I use a Tracker IV and i am wondering what coils are the best for finding old coins. I use the 4inch coil and oldest coin i found was a 1965 dime. I should use my 8inch coil but i dont know which is better for finding old coins. Can someone tell me?

Selecting a coil size depends on the site. There really is only one reason to use a smaller coil and that is to get inbetween trash. If the site has few targets (trash or otherwise) then use a big coil and get the added depth the larger coil size provides. If there are a lot of targets then smaller coils can be advantageous because their detection field encompasses a smaller volume of soil and it is easier to get clean signals. Small coils may also be more sensitive to small metallic items, but I have not seen this personally...the standard coil on my DFX has found miniscule metallic items...this seems to pertain only to very large coils.

TBGO is right about the coils. If the targets are farther apart you use the larger coil to cover more ground faster and reach deeper. If your beeping on a target every couple inches, it's best to use a smaller coil to get between them or only get one target at a time under the coil. The older coins come from the site and they aren't all deep either. You have to do some research to find where people where years ago and try too hunt the area.

Everytime I use my larger coil i get cheesed off cause I can't pinpoint and end up switching back to my 4 inch coil.

Learn pinpointing by finding a metal free piece of ground in the bac yard and spread some newspaper sheets down with a couple coins underneath. Practice using the larger coil to locate the coins. You will soon find the sweet spot on your coil. It isn't always exactly in the center on a couple percent of the coils made by off brands. Major brands have more quality control. Then too, the larger coil might be defective, but I doubt it. You might just need confidence in your ability.

just got a 5 inch coil for mine easy pinpoint 1 inch off the front of the rod same as my DD coil
