Re: What are these freaky things?

Sent the photos to a friend who specializes in 18th & early 19th century relics. He's not sure what they are either, but suggests that they might be pistol butt caps. Anyway, I thought I'd pass it on.

Re: What are these freaky things?

Could they be old plumbing escutcheon plates?

There made to go over the one of your eyes. You know for near and far sighted. LOL. So you dont have to squint your eye to see.

Is that dirt in the hole of the right object? ...or is it hard like grout... or built up sediment?

Can you show a pic of the bottoms? There may be a clue.

Re: What are these freaky things?

I think they are roofing washers that have a rubber seal in the hollow, and are used to keep corrugated iron down. I have seen them in lead, steel, and brass. The pic is a lead one.

God bless
Peter

Re: What are these freaky things?

Nope, they are not washers...they are neither round nor flat. There is nothing in the hole of the right object, that is wear.

Re: What are these freaky things?

Did somebody already say this? Here goes anyhow: these are two pieces of a whole bead. The two halves were joined to form an ovoid bead, which was then strung on a chain. Dozens were needed to make a complete necklace. Then they were glued to every other bead to keep the beads from bunching up, that's why there is a flat and uncolored area on the one to the right in the photo. The necklace was a piece of costume jewelry popular during the 30s. That's why there are several more where these came from, the chain broke and they spilled into the water where the glue dissolved over time and the pieces separated. That's my story and I'm sticking to it until I have another psychadelic flashback.

I found these together in the same hole. They look like brass eyes ;D, perhaps evidence of robot overlords of the 18 century?

They look like brass conch's from a saddle or other piece of tack:

Leather straps are pulled through the hole and tied. The knot holds the conch in place. Some conch's are engraved and fancy. Some are plain. They can be pulled off while riding through dense brush, or the leather can fall apart over time. Will you be sending the reward via check or money order? ;D

Re: What are these freaky things?

nice guesses all but I am still not convinced we have solved this. I have scoured the Internet for a concho like this but have come up empty handed. As for them being jewelley, they are just not "pretty" enough for that. hmmmmm
