I've used a Metel detector! Is that unusual also?

Not unusual at all. When they did research at the Custer battle site they brought in hobby detectorists to scan the area. When they found a target, they placed a flag. Later, the arkies dug all the targets. They did digs at the battlefield in 84-85, again in 89 and 94. Another major survey was done in 2005.

She does not use the detector, not sure if Ed is a member here, but he finds stuff for her, and she takes the credit.

It certainly isn't the norm and is frowned upon by most archaeologists.
