What 3 things (reasonable) would you put at the top of your “To Find” list?

Intact clay pipe bowl (I’ve heard there common on the Thames foreshore, now I just need to get back to visit London)

Indian or trade bead

Civil War or Rev War relic

There’s so much more, I’d say non-traditional (ie buttons, old padlock, pocket knife, etc) as compared to the expected specific type coins, gold, etc, that I want to find the list is much longer than three items. I guess I’m just weird in that sense that I like all of the treasures I find.

Shoot, several weeks ago I found five whole ceramic mason jar lid seals and I was so excited!! Honestly, and I think everyone here can agree that while it’s awesome when you find one on your list it’s the thrill of the hunt that makes worth it.

Spanish silver. I have found a gold coin; gold nuggets; silver coins galore; but in 45+ years of detecting I have never found a Spanish Real. That is really all I have left on my bucket list of finds - my "White Whale."

Reasonable:
  • Half dime (seated or capped)
  • Flying Eagle
  • Franklin half
  • 1/2, 2 or 4 reale (have found 1 and 8)

Unreasonable:
  • GW button
  • Fugio
  • Tree coin (pine tree shilling etc.)
  • Cob/hammered silver

My first eagle coat button.

My first civil war plate

My first Gettysburg campaign relic.

Since I’ll be detecting a hospital site in May or June, and going to a super cool permission in VA this weekend, all three are a possibility.

Mr. Digger, I'd slide that Fugio up into the reasonable category. I found one in 2015, unexpectedly, and I don't detect nearly as much as most people unfortunately. Found in Windham, CT.

I've got everything on the first list (both seated and bust) and NOTHING on the second list !!! 🤣 :dontknow:
Edit, I have a half, a 2 and and 8 real, and a few Cob reals, which is on the bottom list..

Actually the number one thing, which ain't that valuable, is to detect up an historical iron arrowhead. I grew up in an area where they were used extensively after contact, yet never a one turned up. All the big time arrowhead hunters I know never found one in the field. #2 & #3, oh I guess where I left my truck keys and where my good sunglasses are. Those are reasonable.

Best of luck.

Good luck, that belt plate, any of them or snake buckle would be a holy grail for me

I'd slide the GW up there as well.
If can get one up here in Ontario, you have a better chance than me, I'd say.

I’m not talking the LDM, Holy Grail, etc.
I mean items you could realistically hope to find. Not just metal detecting, any treasure hunting method:
A 20t Carat rough clear diamond
A 20 lb Meteorite
An infinity stone

I’ll start it off with 3 of my “hope for items”:

1) An intact, Native American pipe
2) A Native American hatchet or axe head
3) A 1922 or older silver US dollar coin with readable date.
My top 3 would be
Pine tree shilling any variation
Any Spanish silver preferred 8 reale.lol
Any colonial era relics pre 1800

I have been pretty darn lucky with hard to find items on my bucket list that most never dig their entire life. But things I hope to find are a gold coin, a fugio cent, and a pine tree shilling. A Washington inaugural button would be up there as well.

First, great question! This was fun to think about and reading everyone's thoughts, thank you for asking/sharing.

1. A decorative winter jingle sleigh bell from horse tack from 1700-1800's

2. The coins that were brought up awhile ago that the train hoppers would alter- they're so artistic!

3. Forgotten time capsule
