After a very hot summer the weather finally was cool enough to think about detecting. I hauled the camper over to one of my private permissions and spent 5 days detecting at the old fort site. I've heard the soldiers in the IW campaigns didn't like shoulder scales since they were mainly for mitigation of mounted saber strikes and the Indians didn't use sabers. In addition they had to be polished for inspection and a lot of them were intentionally discarded. I don't know if that's a fact, but given the amount of scale pieces I find I think it has some merit. The only out of the ordinary finds this time were some sutler's tokens; three for 50 cents and one for 25. I gave one of the 50 cents tokens to the land owner. Now it's time to choose the better pieces and get them ready for my display case. Thanks for looking!

Awesome recovery’s happy relic hunting

What a nice lot of finds! It must have been a fun vacation. We just had our 5 day moose season, and people make the same holiday out of that, camping out, hunting and partying that it seems you were doing. Very relaxing.
I see an ox shoe and it's almost as big as the horse shoes. We have lots of ox shoes in the East but I don't recall seeing one from a western site before. The nails look like cut ones used in the late 1800s. Would the cases be from army .45-70 rifle and .45 Colt pistol?

Most of the casings this time were .45-70 and .50-70. The shorter .45 cal casings are .45-70 blanks which only had powder and were used for training horses to be steady under fire. I don't find a lot of ox shoes, but they were used for hauling freight to the forts. Thanks for the reply.
