When my Granddad was newly married after WWI he made some moonshine and raised some truck crops along the Shenandoah as well. He had a really great watermelon patch that the local youngsters loved to rob so when he found a native skeleton he wired it together as a scarecrow. Along with a few noisemakers it worked so well that he decided to save it for the following year. After a great deal of thought he decided that my Grandmother would never find it under the bed.
That was the first and last time he underestimated my Grandmother's dedication to housekeeping. We used to like to ask her where she buried it, (Family Joke)
we couldn't even get her to smile. Years later she claimed to have burned the family bible, the earliest entries written in Deutch, because my Dad was born a bit early. RIGHT!
