I am newly retired and want to do the treasure hunting for retirement hobby. Never done it and never used a metal detector. I would love to go on a treasure hunt with someone to see how it's done and learn. I live in Shawnee, Ok

Your best bet would be to post your request on FORUM: OKLAHOMA...

Greetings fellow detectorists & veterans, I’m Mike (Sand Swinger), Air Force vet from Maryland. I’m not new to metal detecting but I recently joined this Forum as I’m coming back after a few years hiatus.

I started detecting 57 years ago when I was 10, my first detector was a Heathkit that we had to assemble, lots of soldering, lol. Then my mom got me a White’s Coinmaster IV. I've owned a bunch of detectors since then, including a Fisher 1225X, Garrett Ace 350, AT Pro, and several Minelab Sovereign’s (love them).

For the last 10+ years, I’ve been swinging a Sovereign Elite (see my profile pic), primarily beach hunting wet & dry sand, but I also love coin shooting old houses, old parks, etc. Since my Sovereign is older technology, bulky, and requires more set up time to get going, I figured it was time for an upgrade.

For those unfamiliar with the Sovereign’s, it’s an audio-only detector that transmits 17 frequencies simultaneously. There’s no bells, whistles or screens. I just set the threshold, start swinging and listen for beeps. Based on the target’s conductivity, there’s a lot of different tones to infer, higher-pitch for higher conductivity targets, lower-pitch for lower conductivity targets, and lots more tones in-between.

But now, I’m older and want a lighter detector, more features, more up-to-date technology, waterproof, a detector I can grab and go AND wireless. So, I just picked up a Minelab X-Terra Elite Expedition Pack, and in the next few months, I’ll be adding a Minelab NOX 700.

Thanks vpnavy and Thank You for your service. I'm still working in the DoD/Federal world and at my previous company, I hired a former Navy Captain to work at PAX River, developing and overseeing our Navy contracts. BTW, love the quotes in your footer. 2A all the way!

Greetings to all from sw idaho/se oregon. I will be posting my finds to share with others and researching new locations to hunt. Anyone in the vale or. area drop me a line and see what i can learn. I have hunted morrels, boletes, matsutake and other wild mushrooms for years. hence the name, love being out and about in nature. Am an avid gold panner and currently feeling like hunting for meteorites, as well as other petty rocks. hope to hear from someone soon.
K.
I used to love meteorites, I have a collection, I found some in the past, I stopped hunting them because Ontario is too wet and too green, not much contrast such as desert to really find them. Not many people understand them or appreciate them, I now switched focus to coins. For meteorites, I would suggest Franconia strewn field but it's pretty much hunted out, you could try Nevada dry lakes.

Why is that? Looking at the ones I’ve seen here I would have thought they’d stick out better in a green place than somewhere like a desert. Is it because they are just hard to see in the grass, and in the desert you’d think “a rock shouldn’t be here”?
