Welcome Aboard! Take a look at FORUM: WEST VIRGINIA for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

Hey folks. Soon to be single 65yo. Well single if my plans go thru anyway. I got my first detector back in 1982, possibly 1983. If I recollect correctly, it was a Whiteā€™s model 4500. Buy todays standards it was pretty primitive. Iā€™ll tell you what though, in ā€œ82ā€ there were only 25 or 30 maybe a few more people who even owned a machine (jk). EVERYTHING was virgin and only 20 years earlier all our quarters were silver. I basically hung that detector on the wall for20 years to do the old wife, kids, house, career, life thing and when I picked it up again there were piles of iron on every stone wall in the state and some great fields looked like Prairie Dog towns Oh the days. Itā€™s funny but in the long run everyone of us could be looking for something other than what weā€™re looking for now. We just like to look. So I ended up making a lot of road trips from Boston to SC to look for fossil sharks teeth that were millions of years old. Then I moved on to hunting Native American points and made more trips to TX searching than I should have. After all these years I HAVE NEVER SUCKED UP A FLAKE OF GOLD! Embarrassing right? Well now I have the time and enough ā€œextraā€ money that Iā€™m planning on taking a four or five week road trip to California to find a few colors. Of course I make a few stops along the way to check a couple of things off my bucket list. I expect Iā€™ll be bugging the crap out of some on you guys with stupid questions and Iā€™m sorry about that in advance. Iā€™m not gonna get any support from the Mrs but a manā€™s got a do what a manā€™s got to do and if I see one more carved coconut head at a tiki bar Iā€™ll go blind. Iā€™m never this long winded but Iā€™m excited to take off. Youse guys have a great xmass.

Welcome. Everyone here is very helpful and I know first hand very forgiving of stupid questions. They have a lot of knowledge and great links to share for more detailed research too.
Forums can be like a box of chocolates. You just never know what youā€™re going to get. I find a ton of people who love the opportunity to demonstrate how much they know and sometimes you find people who know a boatload of cool info but are hesitant to share it. Iā€™ve followed this forum for a long time and it seems like a great crew.. imitation is the highest form of flattery and Iā€™m always willing to follow good or not so good advice but I always try spread the wealth (of knowledge) as long as it doesnā€™t include spot burning or sharing GPS coordinates. See you around!.
