This is another item while picking the basement at Gram's house. It's made from a tree branch and the brass parts are fitted on it. Kind of looks like a pipe but there is not hole going through the whole thing, it just goes in about a inch on the small end. It's engraved J McD on the end of the Large brass end. Now my Great Great grandmother is Jessie Macdonald (The spelling on the engraving is spelled wrong, but I still assume it was hers. But what the heck is it? It's about 6-7 inches long. Oh, Jessie was born and died in Edinburgh,Scotland. Thanks for looking!!!

Possible blackthorn. This is my blackthorn Irish bata (shillelaghs are much shorter).

Whether it was a riding crop, letter opener or a buggy whip handle it seems to be missing something.

It definitely looks as if it is made out of blackthorn wood and most definitely not Manzanita. Manzanita is burgundy in color; I pass a large Manzanita grove everyday.
The brass fittings, the fact that it is most likely Blackthorn wood and especially what appears to be your great grandmothers initials (sort of) tells me it is undoubtedly Scottish. I believe it was once a walking or fighting stick that broke and someone added an brass end cap to clean up the sharp broken piece.

:icon_scratch:I too live in a Manzanita patch....have my whole life....Burgundy?Aged Manzanita looks just like the piece in question....regardless....I care not

blackthorn wood is very very strong * and because ot this is often used to make both "walking" and "fighting canes"-- both scots and irish use em --they do not have to be very large to support a person due to their great strenght , and you can beat the bejesus out of a person with even a small one.

this handle end appears to belong to the old woman by the lettering on the end --so think "womans item" more than likely --letter oper . umbrilla, walking stick cane end or such.

now what does the end that does not have the cap on it look like --is there a "slot" like it once held a blade--ie letter opener or sword cane --or is it hollow like it was once a two part cane (missing the bottom piece ) or is it solid ?
