This is another item while picking the basement at Gram's house. It's made from a tree branch and the brass parts are fitted on it. Kind of looks like a pipe but there is not hole going through the whole thing, it just goes in about a inch on the small end. It's engraved J McD on the end of the Large brass end. Now my Great Great grandmother is Jessie Macdonald (The spelling on the engraving is spelled wrong, but I still assume it was hers. But what the heck is it? It's about 6-7 inches long. Oh, Jessie was born and died in Edinburgh,Scotland. Thanks for looking!!!

It looks like the top part of a walking cane/stick. Neat find :) Breezie

That looks like the handle portion of a "sword cane" with the blade and sheath missing.

I thought maybe too, Breezie - but the item would not have been able to handle usage as a cane etc. It would break. So what else could have went in the end?

Why do you say it couldn't handle the usage especially if it is made from a tree branch? Is it brittle, soft, rotten? I've seen some interesting walking canes made from tree branches. :) Breezie

Fabulous find, indeed!
I do believe it is the end cap of an Irish fighting stick. Awesome!
FYI, a name beginning with Mc is Irish and a name beginning with Mac is Scottish.
Congratulations on your fantastic find! Prosper in 2013 - JSpinner

All of that makes sense about the name, but if the OP thinks it's too weak to be a walking stick, how could it be strong enough to be a fighting stick? :) Breezie

looks like Manzanita wood...very hard, very solid dense wood.Very common to make canes from...and one that size would make a perfect head knocker...womens self defense?

Looks like off from blackthorn tree? With ferrule for reinforcement wood or steel inserted used to disguise cudgel as a walking stick.:dontknow:

It definitely looks as if it is made out of blackthorn wood and most definitely not Manzanita. Manzanita is burgundy in color; I pass a large Manzanita grove everyday.
The brass fittings, the fact that it is most likely Blackthorn wood and especially what appears to be your great grandmothers initials (sort of) tells me it is undoubtedly Scottish. I believe it was once a walking or fighting stick that broke and someone added an brass end cap to clean up the sharp broken piece.

A Scottish walking stick is known as a Kebbie and is similar to the Irish Shillelagh. File:Assorted shillelagh.JPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm now thinking that this shorter piece is the top portion of a Kebbie. Perhaps the piece you found fits into a longer piece to make a walking stick and this top part is used as a defensive weapon.
