Weird finds at my mom's house

I was visiting my mom today and noticed something weird. She collects candles and I noticed she had three candles with coins attached to them with strings. She said she has had them for a long time. The coins appear to be Japanese but I am not sure if they are real or fake or really not much about them. She told me to take the coins and leave the candles, lol :)

Re: Weird finds at my mom's house

Those are Chinese cash coins. They are attached to candles and wind chimes to bring good fortune.

Re: Weird finds at my mom's house

Here's a Chinese Cash Coin Chart I found some years back. Try using this to decide on age and/or dynasty.

Jules

That's a handy little item, thanks for posting.

Good luck with the coins whatever they turn out to be.

Re: Weird finds at my mom's house

Thank you Jules for the chart. Very informative and positive id'd all 3.
Two of them are the Shun-chi (top left)
The other is the Cnien-lung (top 4th from left)

This site has by far the best identifiers and knowledgable people I have known. :)

Yup... Oh wait... I was going to ask... can you get closer pics? If not I'll still give-it-a-go soon as I can concentrate on them. Maybe somebody will beat me to it!

Re: Weird finds at my mom's house

I think this will be a better pic.

Re: Weird finds at my mom's house

Okay... here's what I have, and it's just what you thought after looking at the chart Jules' posted. You were dead on with the IDs... good job! I also thought they may be period "tokens", many of which carry the same charactors.

But... I think you have a "reproduction" coin, not a coin or token, for four reasons:

#1: You did not show me the back, which would normaly hold a mint mark (with 2 to 4 more charactors) so I will assume the reverse(s) are blank.

#2: See the red arrows I made? Those little dots or hashmarks... those are not on the original Chinese cash coins as far as I know. I see that the chart Jules posted also has those marks, or that background... so I could be dead wrong but there is a good chance his chart also is a bunch or reproductions. ???

#3: The charactors are thin, or thinly produced, sharp and crisp... see the coin I added that is an original in the top picture. (Which also shows the reverse)... a little less fine.

#4: The square hole(s) in yours is just too big... or my eyes are worse than I thought.

I may be wrong, but my advise was free (see my avatar note). :D I still think it's cool to know what they represent.

If real, few of these were rare, and most existing coins are common and worth 1 - 3 bucks. :P

Re: Weird finds at my mom's house

Here is the reverse pic. By looking I am sure they are reproductions but I dont have any so I am still happy.
Thanks for the ID help Montana Jim :)

Excellent post, good pics, and good information from all the T-Net people. I never fail to learn something new just by reading all these posts. Thank you. pp
