WEEKEND FINDS

Nice going :) You did well :)

Very nice - the Glass Bottle Stoppers are pretty cool !

Are you just eye-balling those finds? I think I'd be tempted to sift that site!

Very cool finds. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Good one. I always like finding those bottle stoppers for some reason.
Those are likely from hot sauce bottles. Due to no refrigeration 100+ years ago meat was almost always unpalatable without some kind of strong spices. North of England Sauce, Lea & Perrins, A1, etc. account for some of the most numerous antique bottles found in 100+ year old dumps and those glass stoppers of theirs can be found almost anywhere someone has had a picnic or eaten meat of some kind. They're like the pull tabs of the 19th century. Below is pictured some of these bottles, in the past they would have had a cylindrical cork insert in their tops where the glass stopper would have formed the seal.

Aahh, I often wondered what bottles they were from. Yeah they are, were common on our goldfields and a welcome bycatch when detecting.
We had the keeping food thing under control here pretty much before others, born out of necessity in our hot often inhospitable climate, first the bushman bag in the trees then the Coolgardie Safe in the 1890s.
There used to be some very interesting history shows on late night radio that I used to listen. Unfortunately they no longer exist and now its mindless stupidity on them now. But one was actually on Worcestershire sauce of all things and it debunked the general idea that it was an English invention. Some military major of something from the English army way back stationed in India missed having his traditional gravy and sauces for his food there and asked a servant if there was anything he knew of. The servant got a hold of a few but one the Major fell in love with. When about to leave for the good ole UK he had them make him a big batch, barrel full which he took home with him where they replicated the sauce which later became the famous English Worcestershire Sauce. I used to love listening to those shows. Alas now replaced with mindless dribble. 🫤
Well now I can connect those tops with the Worcester Sauce story I like them even more now. 👍
Although somehow I don't think in a 100 yrs time others will view the dreaded pulltabs with as much admiration as we do now those stoppers 😁
All very interesting, thanks.
