Found my first and second Confederate bullets this weekend and my first gold ring, it was a weekend of firsts for me. The first bullet is a Confederate shotgun slug, the second bullet is a Wilkinsons (North Carolina rifle). The ring was dug in a horse corral where the Northern encampment was located. Its kind of odd that the shotgun slug was dug about 3 feet away from where I dug a multi-groove bullet out last month, and both of these bullets are on the very rare list of bullets to find.....HH.....Bill

Really nice bullets!!

Even better ring!!!

Congrats!

;)

Great finds!! You think the ring is from the same time frame as the bullets? WTG!! HH

thats the sweet stuff that keeps us going out in the rain and snow and heat somewhere in there.i forgot what warm was.... >:(

Thanks ya'll, I found the ring in the spot of the Northern encampment. The shotgun slug is probibly worth more than the gold ring depending on what veriant the slug is MM# 64,65,66 it could be up to acouple hundred bucks, the ring is cut in half. It was exciting to dig the ring, but I would rather of dug another odd or rare bullet than a ring (the wife probibly doesnt feel the same way). thanks for looking....HH....Bill

Great bullets, WTG!!!
I know how big theose 3 ringers are,,, what's the diameter on that shotgun slug?
That thing looks huge...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

I dont have a calipur here at the house, but going by the online CW bullet guides, Its either MM# 64 or MM# 66. The diameter is either .679 or .690 , I wouldnt want to be hit by any bullet, but this sucker is very large. It is a Confederate bullet only and was a paper charge.....HH.....Bill

Was there a standard charge of powder for slugs like that? Nice find and definitely a real keeper. Seems like you have a really good place to hunt. Keep digging them good ones.
grizzly bare

Grizzly bare from my understanding it was a paper charge. Think of a modern shotgun shell and replace the plastic cartridge with a paper one. The droped ones that are found as well as many other types of dropped bullets are due to the fact if it rained or did a river crossing there cartridges got wet and they became useless. The sharps multi-groove I have was the same way. This was the main reason for the metal cartridges to come along, much more durable to the climate. It would have been terrible for them back then, but good for us relic hunters of today.....HH.....Bill
