Hello all, this weekend I was soo excited to go hunt at this old homesite. Once I got there on Saturday and started hunting I realized how hard it was to MD in all of the brush, high grass, and cut down trees. I was there for about 5 or 10 min and I got a strong nickel hit with my Prizm III, I got pretty excited then out popped the only coin I found at the site, a 1975 nickel.....bummer, other than the nickel I found 3 old shotgun shell butts, 2 dating from 1911-30's, and one dating to 1911, all REM UMC and UMCCo. Also dug this old jar lid and the small bullet casing in the pic, looks like a strange caliber....maybe .30? It was so hard to hunt there I only stayed for a couple hours and probably only covered about 10% of the place. Plus there was a lot of pieces of the tin roof scattered over the ground everywhere. The other shell casings include a 7mm mag, a .223, and a .45 cal. I found these and the "B" at another old house that my grandmother owns, and that my family used to picnic at every Sunday. No pics of the second house tho....

On Sunday rain was forecast pretty much all day so I decided to stay close to the house and hunt in my yard yet again. Managed to dig 8 clad pennies, 3 dimes and a nickel.....along with 2 more wheaties, a 1953D and a 1946. That brings the total of wheaties from my yard to 29 or 30. Found these last two by moving my kids swingset cuz I had found most of the other wheaties just in front of the slide. Also found the silver plated spoon that says "National Silver Plate E.P.N.S." on the back of the handle. The spoon was at 8-10 inches and registered as a half dollar/dollar on my target ID. Also got this steel heart from some child's jewelry I'm guessing, and a half-sphere that looks like it may have been an earring, but no markings.

All in all a pretty uneventful weekend but I was happy to get out and hunt for a while and the rain was on and off Sunday but it never lasted long. It was pretty awesome to explore this old house tho, it is still in suprisingly good shape, and I was able to walk up the creaky wooden steps and look in the upstairs too, which was empty. I hope to go back there in the near future and try to hunt what I can but like I said, its so grown up that it is very hard to get a good swing in. Until next weekend.......

Looks like a great spot. ?It may take a few trips to get all the new trash off the top of the ground. ?
You know that place is holding some great finds. ?Also looks like a good place to find a cashe.

Good luck ?Keep us posted

I was judt going to say, " Looks like a cache find, just waiting to happen..."
Great digs, WTG!!!
Good luck & Happy hunting~

there is a total of 5 structures on the property, the house and two buildings directly behind it, an outbuilding that looks like it was for equipment storage and a barn that is a couple hundred yards back from the house but I didn't even venture back that far.....yet

I was thinking that it would be a good place for a cache too since it went throught the depression and the gold meltdown, but like I said, there are soo many weeds, briars, small trees, and trees that have been cut down and the branches are laying everywhere it is very hard to search, not to mention all of the tin sheets and pieces laying around....I may try to get permission to do some clearing because I believe that it would pay off in the end. Its hard to believe how well the wood and tin has held up over the years.

The oldest coin that I have dug so far is 1920, a wheat penny, and I am hoping that this site will help me break my record!!

Some great finds there HH. I have a few old building like your's I going to take a look at and see what I can find. Right now, have to wait for the rain to stop.

I know how frustrating it is to have a really great spot and then to be so disappointed with having to figure out how to find anything good for the overgrowth and the tin! I have an old house I got permission to hunt this spring...but it was almost impossible to find the good stuff because of all the bad stuff! :D Maybe if we wait for the grass to die down that would be one less hassle! ;)
Really great pictures!!! Thanks for showing us!

would you all think that the owners of this house would have been considered wealthy, since there are so many buildings on the property and a house with a full size attic? It just seemed odd to me that there is so many buildings there, I thought that most people back then were very poor and lucky to just have a roof over their heads..especially here in WV. Any thoughts? I'm just trying to decide whether to go back and/or try to do some clearing so I can search more than just 5-10% of the land there. Thx....

That is an awsome looking site. It's always hard to decide just where to start. I always feel like I have to rush all over the whole place before I can settle down & do it right.

That's a nice little fixer-upper there.? ;D

Don't you just hate those tin roofs.? It make you want to just give up on a site. Good luck!

that pretty much sums up what was going through my head spotz!! I think that I definitely need to hit that place again, at least for a whole day, and do some methodical detecting....now that I got the giddies out....lol
I also need to get back to the barn and check around the small creek that splits the property

Wow, that site looks incredible! Hey, i know a good trick for areas with high grass that make it difficult to detect. If you get a sheet of plexiglass, about 1'x3' in size, and place a hole on each side lenghtwise, then put a rope through it that when the plexiglass is layed on the ground the rope will extand to about stomach level. Then all you have to do is put the plexiglass on the ground and step on it. Scan your detector over the now "flat" area. Then with your foot on the plexiglass, you can pull up on the rope and move the whole setup forward another foot for another scan. Yeah, it sounds like a lot of work, but it can help sometimes.

Nice spot, Looks really old. All framed house. The brush looks like it made it a challenge. Maybe hit it again right before spring.
