Week of: the Sacred Heart; Witchy pendant, 8' copper rod
I hit a school Sunday, a little change of pace.
The school yard was locked up and posted as they all are now here in south florida. But I searched an expansive grass strip alongside the street where there is head-in parking. Some of the parking spaces themselves are also unpaved. That is where I found the coins, the 2 wheaties, and the Sacred Heart pendant.
The pendant shows Christ with the Sacred Heart symbol in the center of his breast. This symbol represents a movement within the Catholic, and some High Reformation churches, as well as some Eastern Catholic churches, to make devotions to Christ's physical heart as an expression of his love for mankind. It was started by a French nun in the 1700's. It was associated with supporters of the Fascist Franco rebels in Spain, and in France with opposition to the Commune.
The Sacred Heart icon usually shows a flame coming out the top of it; a wound in the side of it from the Roman lance that cut Christ on the cross; and thorns wound across it representing the crown of thorns. Above the heart, there is always a cross. The pendant does not show these elements in detail, but you can see that an effort was made to represent the thorns and the flame and cross.
It weighs 13.4 grams. It is not marked in any way. There was a ring in the top that was nearly rusted all the way through, obviously ferrous. The condition of the steel ring indicates the pendant was in the ground for quite some time, yet it shows no indication of copper corrosion, and almost no tarnish, which makes me think it may not be plated.
Coincidentally, I found this Sacred Heart Auto League medallion Saturday in the roadside near downtown Miami. Started in 1955 to encourage folks to drive in a manner that is mindful of their spiritual obligation not to harm others, they do not charge anything to join, and they give you this medallion to mount in your car to remind you to drive safely.
That's also where I found the 8' copper grounding rod you can see in the photo below. It was not near any of the electric poles, so maybe it had been for a house before the streets were laid out there.
The previous weekend, I found this cool artsy, witchy pendant, which I think was actually part of an earring. It's not marked, but is certainly silver with a garnet; it was either marked elsewhere on the earring, or it's an unmarked craft piece. I broke off two of the hanging wires by being careless handling it.
The token on the right is interesting - No Cash Value, minted by GDC=Green Duck Company, a private mint that did a lot of casino tokens, went out of business in 1999 I think.
