Re: We think we've got a meteorite

Let me get this straight... you spent the time to take excellent pictures, upload them to the Internet, and write this post but you haven't found time to get a magnet out of the drawer and test it?!?! I think that's the first thing I'd do before posting it as a possible find. But maybe that's just me. ;D

Good luck. I sure hope it turns out to be real. How much does it weigh?

LOL! Yeah, it's true...I did all that and haven't found a magnet yet to try on it. I'll let you know how it turns out...but I am kind of scared to find out it aint a meteorite. But if it is, I'll weigh it as well.

I'm back...a magnet does stick to it. Turns out we don't have a scale in the house so I "made" one and it weighs four nickels and one dime.

Back again. A nickel weighs 5 grams and a dime weighs 2.268 grams. So the object I've found weighs a close approximate of 22.5 grams. (It still pushed it's side of my homemade floating stick in water scale down further than the coins...but barely)

Re: We think we've got a meteorite

I have a concern with that one large void on the lower left side. That looks like a trapped pocket of air void and not a charring friction indentation. Air pockets do not form in a vaccum. This may be some iron slag. You need to take this to an expert for a proper examination.

Re: We think we've got a meteorite

looks like magnetite or some similar composite.
A magnet test alone will not tell you much, search for streak test procedure and do that then file an area away on it to view the internal composition by eye.
